What causes dry eye syndrome?
If you read about the dry eye treatment over the internet, you will come to know about a lot of reasons which causes this condition. Different kinds of reasons have a different impact on every individual. In the following section, you will come to know about the various causes of dry eye syndrome.
The lack of ample amount of tears in the eyes is one of the major causes of dry eyes. Known as Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca, it is the dysfunction of tear glands where they are not capable of producing enough amounts of tears.
Some reasons that cause this are as the following:
- Old age contributes to dry eye syndrome because the tear gland loses their ability to refresh the tear gland constantly.
- Some medical conditions such as Vitamin A deficiency, lack of Omega-3 acids, diabetes and lupus, to name a few, also contributes to decreased tear production.
- Lack of tear production can also be caused because of side-effects of some prescribed medications such as antihistamines or antidepressants.
- Lack of tear production may also be due to the damage inflicted upon the tear glands as a result of some external factors.
Increased tear evaporation also causes the eye to lose out on lubrication at a rate faster than the rate of tear produced by the tear glands. This may be caused due to several reasons like:
- Continuous exposure to dry wind, clogged smoke or heated air causes the tears to evaporate rapidly. Since the surface of the eye remains exposed, the effective lubrication tends to evaporate at a rate faster than it has been produced.
- Unable to blink your eye frequently also causes increased tear evaporation because the surface of the eye remains exposed to the air for a long period of time. This may happen due to some medical disability or while you are concentrating on something rigorously for a long time.
- Increased tear evaporation can also be caused because of abnormal eye conditions such as out-turning of the lids (ectropion) and in-turning of the lids (entropion).
So, these are the major reasons which cause an individual to suffer from dry eyes.

- The doctor prescribes artificial tears to those who are suffering from a slightly lower intensity of dry eye syndrome. The tears are present in a liquid form and need to be dropped over the surface of the eye to keep it lubricated.
- Restasis is also a kind of artificial tear drops but prescribed for those who have a more severe problem.
- Preservative-free drops are also given to some of the patients diagnosed with dry eye syndrome to prevent the growth of bacteria.
So here are the various major causes and dry eye treatment methods that can be followed to help a person suffering from dry eyes.
Note: If diagnosed with dry eye syndrome, it is best to consult a doctor before starting with any kind of medication. Self-medication is strictly a big no for this or any other type of problem.
